Typhoon Egay Fundraiser

In the Philippines, typhoons have always been a huge problem.  As it lies on the specific ring of fire, the nation is impacted by an average of 20 typhoons every year. The heavy rains, turbulent winds, and uncontrollable flooding interrupt everyday life- school is cancelled, roads are rendered unusable, and homes collapse under the immense pressure of the rainfall. These problems, further exacerbated by poor disaster management and flood control by the government, are difficult to foresee and even more difficult to work around.

According to a 2024 report by Philstar, almost a month of school (53 days) are lost on average to class suspensions due to inclement weather. Some schools are impacted in even worse ways, with buildings being impacted and damaged, and class having to pause indefinitely. Online classes aren't always a solution, either; especially for provincial areas, stable internet connection is often hard to come by, further abetted by the weather conditions. That's what happened to Dammang Elementary School of Cagayan when Typhoon Egay struck in 2023.

In 2023, disaster struck the Dammang Elementary School in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan in the form of Typhoon Egay. Their school facilities, including classrooms, were flooded and damaged. Classes had to be paused, putting an abrupt halt on one of the most important aspects of childhood and raising changemakers- a proper primary education.

Believing in the right to proper education for every kabataan, Kabatapang sought to rectify the situation and held a fundraiser for the repair of the school, raising more than 26,600 pesos in total. The repairs were successful, and Dammang Elementary School has since continued operations.
